106th lecture of Tsinghua Information Forum

The 106th Tsinghua Information Forum - NEC 7th Lecture was held on June 3rd 2013 at the Lecture Hall of FIT Building. Prof. Wenfei Fan gave a report on "Querying Big Data".

In this lecture, Prof. Fan talked about the three important questions of big data computational complexity, relationship of big data and MapReduce, and the quality of big data. He provided an overview of recent advances in tackling these questions. Recent years, big data has attracted attention from both academic and industrial community. People have questions about the importance of big data. Prof. Fan analyzed the importance and research point of big data, pointing out the future work for big data. He pointed out that big data cannot be equaled to MapReduce. There are other methods and frameworks to tackle big data. Prof. Fan also pointed out his view on "big" and he said that the quality and quantity are equally important in big data area. The lettuce was hosted by Prof. Zhou Lizhu. 20 teachers and more than 100 students attended the lecture.

Prof. Fan received his PhD from University of Pennsylvania, and his MS and BS from Peking University. He is the Chair Professor of Web Data Management in the School of Information, University of Edinburgh, UK. He is National Professor of the 1000-Talent Program and a Yangtze River Scholar, China. He is a visit professor of University of Pennsylvania, Drexel University, Beihang University. His current research interests include big data, data quality, data integration, Web services and XML data.
